When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Victoria Amelina turned from novelist to war crimes researcher, photographing ruins and recording testimonies of survivors and eyewitnesses, writing what would become this book. Amelina died aged thirty-seven, after a Russian cruise missile struck the restaurant at which she was dining with three writers.
