An evening about the legendary psychiatrist and anti-colonialist thinker Frantz Fanon, whose centennial we are celebrating in 2025.

Frantz Fanon's legendary anti-colonial text The Wretched of the Earth (1961) remains one of the most influential critiques of colonialism to this day. Born in Martinique in 1925, Fanon fought in France in the Second World War, later to return there for his medical degree in psychiatry. Disillusioned by his experiences of racism during the war and inspired by his daily practice as a clinician, Fanon wrote and published his first book Black Skin, White Masks, which is concerned with the effect that life in a white, racist world has on the Black psyche.

Author Adam Shatz, who is also the US editor of the London Review of Books, has written an illuminating new biography that aims to free the man of the legend and takes a nuanced and fresh look at his intellectual legacy. Shatz will be reading from his book and discussing Fanon's life and work with Lisa Schürmann (Marga Schoeller).
