Beschreibung

Zudem zeigt sich der soziokulturell weitreichende Einfluss ihrer Interpretation des Orphée.****************Among the famous visitors to Weimar in the 19th century were the French singer and composer Pauline Viardot-Garcia and the Russian writer Ivan S. Turgenev. Apart from the performances of the operetta Le dernier sorcier, which they wrote together, the time spent by the singer and her writer friend in Weimar have hitherto been little studied. New sources and unpublished archive material offer a deeper insight into their life and work in the town. The first study in this volume is such a contribution to the study of Viardot's reception and influence. The second study is devoted to Viardot's performance as Orphée at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris in a version of Gluck's Orphée prepared for her by Berlioz, and thus is also a contribution to the study of Berlioz and of Gluck. The role of Orphée was one of the greatest successes in Viardot's singing career and also the end of her stage career. An analysis of contemporary reactions to Viardot's performance makes it possible to reconstruct a profile of her abilities and her voice at the end of her career, and to show the wide-ranging socio-cultural influence of her interpretation of Orphée.
