Crystal works at the sugar beet factory in North Dakota on the land of her ancestors, the Chippewa. When she learns that her husband has not only embezzled church funds but has also taken off, she and her daughter Kismet must defend their place in the small community. Kismet therefore accepts a marriage proposal from a white farming family, but her heart belongs to someone else. With her usual wit and sense of absurd situations, Louise Erdrich once again succeeds in depicting the precarious existence of First Nation Americans in a realistic yet light-hearted way. And, of course, ghosts of the dead and superstition are also part of the story.
